My inspiration for running was when I watched the New York City Marathon. If they could do it so could I...these were ordinary people out there, many over 40, like me. I have never been very sporty even when I was younger, so this was very motivating. So, from never having run a single mile, I decided to run a marathon. Completing the Victoria marathon in British Columbia made me, an ordinary person, feel like Michael Jordan! It also gave me immense confidence in my ability to do other things, which got me into trekking (Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Base Camp and Mt Kinabalu have been the highlights of my treks). Maybe what excites me about both running and trekking is that they are both social activities. Work was also another social activity for me...my last job was with Paypal in the Bay Area in California, heading their data warehousing group. I loved work because I liked the people I worked with. We moved to Delhi in 2004, I took up an assignment here (I dont count this one in my list of jobs!), did not enjoy it at all...and it was soon history. I continue to run because I still enjoy it. And here is a picture of me....I don't have the body of a runner....maybe that is also why I run!

For me "running" is more than just running, its my life, my first love. I started running way back in 1984 when I was in a hostel in Mussoorie". In 1993, I managed to do a half marathon in 1 hr 18 min, which would have been in top 50 in India then. It just shows we definitely have talent in this beautiful country, we just need to nurture it carefully. I wanted to pick up running as career, but I was cajoled and arm twisted to pick up medicine, which I'm glad happened. In 1994, I had retinal hole in the right eye, which was not treated properly and it developed into a retinal detachment in a month's time. By now I had retinal holes in the left eye too. In total I had 3 procedures on my eyes, 2 on right and one on left. The doctor told me to stop doing any physical activities, especially running. I didn't run a decent distance till I got to London, which was in 2003. I was a member of a running club where the then president, Siri Terjesan (100 km Australian / UK / USA team member with the best time of 8hr 22min) talked me into running again. She entered me in an event called Paris to London in 2004, where the event included a marathon or more every day (avg 60 km a day) for 8 consecutive days. This was supposed to start with Paris marathon and end with London Marathon. I some how managed 5 days of this ordeal with first 4 days, I had a marathon time of sub 4 hours.
I have now done more than 100 marathons in training and 27 actual marathons. I don't believe in counting them. I run, because I love it... not for numbers. I wanted to bring a running revolution in the country by looking to get inactive people to get moving, no matter what distance was covered in how long, as long as they put in the effort.

I started running at the age of 40 and ran my 1st marathon at 41, while posted in Chicago with Motorola. I got bitten by the running bug since and have run 23 marathons across several cities and continents. I have found that running really unleashes the potential of each individual, and that's what's excited me to quit my Corporate career of 25 years with Unilever, Nestle, a garment company and finally Motorola, and switch gears to start something I am passionate about. I have had the opportunity to run in several major marathons - including Chicago, New York City, London, as well as the original - from Marathon to Athens. After my 2nd marathon I set myself a target to run 50 marathons, one in each continent (including The Antarctic) and also qualify for the Boston Marathon. In school and college I was into mountaineering and trekking, and just 7 years ago, along with long distance running, I got into skiing and have found myself atop several double black diamond slopes even though I am no way an expert skier. But you live only once! So - life begins at 40 I guess. If you love life, you're on the right website, else if you want to start getting to love life, you couldn't have chosen better!
